Tips & Planning

Removal Boxes & Packing Boxes1 - 2 Weeks Before
Go through all of your belongings and get rid of anything you don’t need or use. Why Wait Removals is happy to donate items to local charities on your behalf at no extra cost should you wish.

Make sure you notify your current utility companies of your move and ensure your new home will be connected.

Organise for your mail to be redirected by the Post Office and ensure magazine subscriptions are advised of your new address.

Notify your children’s current schools and find new ones in your new area. Cancel your regular services, such as newspapers and window cleaner. Make arrangements to discontinue your telephone line and set one up for your new home.

1 Week Before
Confirm your moving date at least 5 days in advance. If you’re doing your own packing, start packing items, making sure you pack items together that will be housed in the same room in your new home. Ensure you label boxes by room for ease of unpacking. Don’t forget to sort out your garage and garden shed.Packing Removal Boxes

General Packing
If required we provide comprehensive packing services.

Do not interlock box flaps together - always tape bottoms and tops with at least three strips of tape and at least halfway up or down the sides of the box for strength.

Remember that taping reinforces the strength of the box, and yet can be easily cut with a blade later when unpacking.

Don't save all your packing for the last day, begin packing items not needed well in advance. Packing gets more and more tiresome over a period of time, so it is a good idea to have as much done as possible in advance of your moving date.

If moving abroad do not pack your chequebook, passport, visas or airline tickets. If you are putting your goods in storage before you travel overseas, don't pack important papers like passports, driver's licenses, birth certificates, etc, although you can always visit our Storage facilities and retrieve any last minute items.

The Day Before
Pack a small box of things you’ll need once you arrive at your new home (food, drinks, tea bags, milk, kettle, light bulbs, etc.)

Defrost and clean the refrigerator and freezer. Disconnect your cooker, washing machine and dishwasher.

When moving with young children it is important that they know exactly what is happening and what to expect on moving day. If one has parents or friends who can look after the children for the bulk of the day then this is ideal, in particular for parents.
Packing Household Items

Moving your Plants
House Plants: Drain excess water from your plant pots and if you are packing them yourself, be sure to tell your Why Wait Removal team and they will provide materials to protect the pots. Large pots should be placed in plastic bags to stop soil spillage.

Wrap the root ball in plastic sheeting, ensuring soil is moist. Box up pot less plants with cane supports to stabilise them for transportation.

Moving Day
Ensure you are available to help direct and check the condition of your belongings as they are loaded onto the van.

Moving with Pets - Advice to help your pets settle in safely.
Cats and dogs become very attached to their own familiar territory, so give them extra care and attention before and during the move. Keep them indoors on the day, in a quiet room - preferably the room in which they have their bed - and well away form the hustle and bustle of the moving team.

Don't allow your animals to go out unaccompanied - they may wander off and want to leave. You could keep your pet away from all the commotion by asking a sympathetic friend, neighbour or relative to look after it for you.

Your dog should be wearing a collar with an identity tag, but make sure it has your new address on it just in case it gets lost and tries to return to the old house.

After your home has been emptied
Ensure the entire house is cleaned thoroughly ready for the new owners. Turn off all switches and lock windows and doors.
